A propósito do "Katrina"

As palavras sábias em "OUR ENEMY THE STATE", Albert Jay Nock (o libertarian anti-New-Deal e Old Right dos anos 30, falando de cheias):

"When the Johnstown flood occurred, social power was immediately mobilized and applied with intelligence and vigour. Its abundance, measured by money alone, was so great that when everything was finally put in order, something like a million dollars remained.

If such a catastrophe happened now [Katrina?], not only is social power perhaps too depleted for the like exercise, but the general instinct would be to let the State see to it. Not only has social power atrophied to that extent, but the disposition to exercise it in that particular direction has atrophied with it.

If the State has made such matters its business, and has confiscated the social power necessary to deal with them, why, let it deal with them.

We can get some kind of rough measure of this general atrophy by our own disposition when approached by a beggar. Two years ago we might have been moved to give him something; today we are moved to refer him to the State's relief-agency [fala dos efeitos do New-Deal].

The State has said to society, You are either not exercising enough power to meet the emergency, or are exercising it in what I think is an incompetent way, so I shall confiscate your power, and exercise it to suit myself. Hence when a beggar asks us for a quarter, our instinct is to say that the State has already confiscated our quarter for his benefit, and he should go to the State about it."

Argumentation Ethics

The brilliant and erudite Dutch libertarian legal theorist Frank Van Dun has a powerful, rich and provocative draft article: Comment on R.P.Murphy’s & Gene Callahan’s Critique of Hans-Hermann Hoppe’s Argumentation Ethics.

It's a response to recent criticism of Hans-Hermann Hoppe's argumentation ethics.

Van Dun is well-suited to join the fray, having himself written on this topic before, as he explains in his draft comment. For more on Van Dun, see:

TROTSKY, STRAUSS, AND THE NEOCONS War Party's leftist and elitist roots exposed (Justin Raimundo)

"
Arnold Beichman was next up at bat, with his own nominee: in any discussion of the neocons and their influence, he wants any reference to Leon Trotsky or the influence of Trotskyism to be strictly verboten. Writing in National Review Online, Beichman is outraged at Jeet Heer's National Post piece detailing the Trotskyist roots of leading neocons, whose cocktail party chatter evidently includes abstruse references to Max Shachtman and the factional history of the Fourth International.(...)

Apparently in response to ex-Trotskyist-turned-neocon
Stephen Schwartz for affectionately referring to the killer of Kronstadt as "the old man" and "L.D.," Beichman launches a magnificent attack on the crimes of Trotsky(...)

Schwartz responded the next day in National Review with what I think is the last word on this subject: his article is the definitive text that proves how right we paleos have been all along about this troublesome sect known as the neocons. Schwartz denounces "a group of neofascists" who supposedly claim that "neoconservatives are all ex-Trotskyists," but defends Heer's piece as serving another aim, that of describing "the very real evolution of certain ex-Trotskyists toward an interventionist position on the Iraq war" – i.e., his own evolution and that of his friends and associates in the neocon movement.(...)

The point of Schwartz's rebuttal, however, is that he is proud of his Trotksyist past. He even gathers his co-thinkers together in proclaiming, in true Trotskyist fashion, that they constitute a semi-official faction, which some editor at NRO deemed "Trotsky-cons":

"The second issue at hand involves the actual ex-Trotskyists who engaged with the issue of the Iraqi war. I call this group, to which I belong, the 'three-and-a-half international,' which is an obscure reference I won't explain fully. But I use it to indicate three main individuals: Christopher Hitchens, myself, and the Iraqi intellectual Kanan Makiya, who all did indeed march under the Red Flag at some point…."

Here is where Schwartz descends into sheer hilarity, given that the best humor is always unintentional. He not only defends dear old Trotsky against Beichman's calumniations, but also red-baits Beichman, reminding him – and NRO's by this time utterly baffled readers – of Beichman's Stalinist past. Beichman was a fellow traveler of the Communist Party in the 1930s, when he worked for the pro-war, pro-FDR left-wing newspaper PM. It's all too funny, but one can only wonder what ordinary, garden-variety, un-prefixed conservatives think of all this sound and fury.

Here, after all, are the ex-Commies of yesteryear re-enacting the Stalin-Trotsky split in the pages of National Review – even as the magazine continues with its ridiculous campaign denying the very existence of neocons as anything but plain old vanilla conservatives.

The magazine's online readers, such as they are, may be mystified by Schwartz's argument that Trotsky has a lot to say to the neocons of today, because his analysis of the Moscow Trials somehow impacts on the neocon analysis of Peter Arnett. (Say, what?) But I, for one, particularly enjoyed Schwartz's contention that the Beichman jeremiad represented an effort to "exclude Hitchens and myself from consideration as reliable allies in the struggle against Islamist extremism," or, as he proudly avers:

"Because we have yet to apologize for something I, for one, will never consider worthy of apology. There is clearly a group of heresy-hunters among the original neoconservatives who resent having to give way to certain newer faces, with our own history and culture. These older neoconservatives cannot take yes for an answer, and they especially loathe Hitchens. But nobody ever asked Norman Podhoretz [um dos principais ideólogos neocons ] to apologize for having once written poetry praising the Soviet army. Nobody ever asked the art critic Meyer Schapiro, who was also a Trotskyist, to flog himself for assisting illegal foreign revolutionaries at a time when it was considered unpatriotic, to say the least. Nobody ever asked Shachtman or Burnham, or, for that matter, Sidney Hook, or Edmund Wilson, or a hundred others, to grovel and beg mercy for inciting war on capitalism in the depths of the Great Depression."

Holding that Red Banner high, Schwartz declares war on the ex-Stalinists in the neocon movement – of which there are plenty, as he correctly points out – and proclaims his "Third and a Half International." It is almost too farcical to be taken seriously, but then the "conservatism" upheld by National Review since the purge of John Sullivan has never been serious, and this just underscores the sheer absurdity of its claim to be some kind of final arbiter.

Schwartz raises a perfectly legitimate point: if the ex-Trotskyists have to apologize for importing their particular brand of militarism into the neocon movement, then why don't the ex-Stalinists have to "grovel," too? I say let them both apologize for supporting some variant of mass-murdering commie totalitarianism, or stop pretending to be "conservatives."

The ideas that energize the neoconservative movement have little if anything to do with traditional conservatism. That this suspicion is now widespread among traditional conservatives, as well as journalists, is not to be undone by lame accusations of alleged "anti-Semitism."

Paring down the permitted language of political debate is not going to work, either. It is clear beyond the need for further proof that the War Party bamboozled the American public into taking that first fateful step on the road to empire. We know who they are, and what they believe: it is not a "conspiracy," as the detractors of this theory insist, because there is nothing secret about it – and because the same people are urging us onward, to Iran, Syria, and beyond.

The esoteric elitist Strauss, the Leninist elitist Trotsky, Schwartz and his mock-operatic "Third and a Half International" re-fighting the inter-Commie faction wars of the 1930s with a gaggle of ex-Stalinists – this is the official "conservative" movement of today!

No wonder Commissar Frum and his fellow neocons felt compelled to attack us antiwar, limited government types as "unpatriotic conservatives," [acusação feita por um Canadiano!] going so far as to declare that they "turn their backs" on us.

They turned their backs on authentic conservatism some time ago."

PS.

LUDWIG VON MISES' HUMAN ACTION AS A TEXTBOOK OF ECONOMICS, Jesús Huerta de Soto*

Murray N. Rothbard,78 have given a great thrust forward to the theory of monopoly, concentrating their analysis, more than on the number of enterprises "existing" in each "sector" and on the form or "elasticity" of their supposed demand curves, on the study of the dynamic process of competition and, therefore, on whether the free practice of entrepreneurship is prevented by force in any part of the market. Rothbard, moreover, hit the weak point of the neoclassical theory of monopoly, stating that its whole analysis is based on the static comparison between the “monopoly price” and the "price of perfect competition" which, as it is a price of equilibrium which never exists in the real market, cannot be known or, therefore, serve as a reference point to decide, in practice, whether or not there is a "situation of monopoly". It is important to highlight the fact that Mises, during his own lifetime, had the opportunity to see these studies on the theory of monopoly, which in some way culminated his own studies, flourish; and, fortunately, we have a direct testimony which indicates that he was in complete agreement with these new theoretical developments.79

79 Effectively, Margit von Mises, in her biography of her husband, tells us that "in Stresa, during the 1965 Mont Pèlerin meeting, Joaquín Reig once spoke to Ludwig von Mises about monopoly and Rothbard's Man, Economy and State, which had been published in 1962. Reig directed Ludwig's attention to the fact that Rothbard, one of Ludwig's most able and admiring pupils, did not completely agree with Ludwig's analysis of monopoly.

Ludwig replied: 'I would subscribe to every word Rothbard has written in his study'.

About this Reig told me: 'That was such a generous statement of Ludwig von Mises to say that one of his own students had exposed one of his own ideas better than he himself had been able to do it, that my admiration for this man jumped sky-high'. Margit von Mises, My Years with Ludwig von Mises, op. cit., p. 158.

Publicado no Wars4StatusQuo.

A linguagem do anti-islâmico-fascista

* one poster has written as a response to a townhall.com article (which, to save you time, is itself of no interest):

"Without a doubt we do have to fight them. Key phrase in your post "better to crush them now" exactly! Question is… why and the hell doesn't the United States military do just that? If we are in the fight of our life put the boots on the ground and kick some ass, or better yet, give warning to all civilians to get of dodge because there is soon to be a very large explosion followed by a even larger cloud."

* "The only way to rebuild Iraq into a stable democracy is to tear it down totally and build it back up; that's how we did it in WW2 and it worked out just fine!"

* "We are in a struggle that is life or death for all involved. We will either have the will to defeat our enemy or we will emolden them by giving up and going home. We had all better realize that just as Sec. Rumsfeld said, they will not give up, and any retreat now only increases the likelihood that we will be fighting them closer to ou shores, if not within our borders....but we will have to fight them! Better to crush them now, than have to contend with them forever!"

Fascismo

Mussolini deve estar agoniado.

A outra coisa segura a afirmar é:

Director General of Al-Arabiya TV in Defense of President Bush's Description of London Bombers: 'They Are Fascists'
The Westerners know that fascism is an extremist nationalist movement, which emerged from the European society, and was responsible for destructive wars caused by its premises, which are based on discrimination, racism and hatred. This approximation is correct when you apply it to the literature of the Islamic extremists. The same as the Europeans fought fascism and the fascists by word and by gunpowder, the world will fight the extremist Islamists. This is what the good Muslims, who are at the forefront of those hunting down Al-Qaeda, do; the same as the Muslim who exposed the latest conspiracy to hijack the airliners, when he hastened to inform the security authorities when he suspected what was happening in the neighborhood.
"This is why I do not understand what those people - who want to protect reputation and image from the Westerners - want to call the Muslim extremists who resort to violence. Do they want to call them Khawarij (the earliest Islamic sect, which traces its beginning to a religious-political controversy over the Caliphate)? The problem is that no one (in the West) understands its historical meaning. Do they call them by their names only, such as Osama, Ayman, Muhammad, and Zamani? Do they call them according to the sarcastic Egyptian way: 'people who should remain nameless?'"

What is Left? What is Right? Does it Matter?

Publicado na "The American Conservative".

"Since its inception, The American Conservative has been dealing with questions of what Right and Left mean in the modern context and to what extent the terms even apply anymore. Commentary memorably took up similar issues in a 1976 symposium, and, 30 years later, in a time of renewed ideological flux, we think a reconsideration is in order.

In the interest of hosting a lively discussion, we chose contributors from across the political spectrum and asked for their thoughts on the following questions:

1. Are the designations “liberal” and “conservative” still useful? Why or why not?
2. Does a binary Left/Right political spectrum describe the full range of ideological options? Is it still applicable?

Not all of these authors share TAC’s editorial orientation, but we believe there is wisdom in the council of many, and each was chosen as representative of a particular perspective. We leave our readers to decide which insights most accord with their own."

"WAR GUILT IN THE MIDDLE EAST"

Publiquei uma versão do texto actualmente só disponível em pdf "WAR GUILT IN THE MIDDLE EAST", em Wars4StatusQuo. Deixo aqui apenas a minha introdução.

Daí a alcunha de Rothbard, the Anti-Sate.

O que é fascismo?
The word fascism has been the most inflated and misused political term in any Western language. To the 20th century's first generation of communists, it referred to anyone who advocated a forceful response to causes dear to communists or fellow travellers. In its most ridiculous misuse, during the 1930s, German communists, under orders from Moscow, referred to their social democratic rivals as social fascists.
The second generation of communists and the West's New Left of the '60s also inflated and misused the term to describe their resilient domestic opponents on the Left or Right, as well as any developing world dictatorship aligned with the US.
Yet for those with a respect for history and intellectual clarity, the term has a more precise meaning. It refers to a revolutionary political mass movement or regime that aims to achieve national greatness by radically transforming political and social life with totalitarian rule and by a policy of imperial expansion. Fascist ideology is reactionary in that it aspires to re-create a mythical past.
The originator of the term fascism was Benito Mussolini. Yet the dictatorship he created in Italy was in practice more farce than a revolutionary ideological reality. The only genuinely revolutionary and brutal manifestation of fascism that combined totalitarian rule with global expansion was the German National Socialist regime. It was also permeated by a virulent racism that was profound and genocidal. Nazism was imitated by radical right-wing movements in wartime Croatia (the Ustashi), Hungary (the Arrow Cross) and Romania (the Iron Guard).
Fascism and its nominal antithesis, communism, were, until the late '70s, the only two visible manifestations of totalitarianism. Communism differed from fascism in that it looked towards a social utopia that it claimed had never yet existed. It also proclaimed an affinity for Western enlightenment values, especially social equality and scientific rationality, although in practice it created new systems of social inequality.

O que é o islamo-fascismo
Since the Iranian revolution of 1979, the world has been confronted by a new form of totalitarianism. It is a multidimensional phenomenon that originated not only before Bush but even before the state of Israel was created. The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in British colonial Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna. Its most famous theoretician, Sayyid Qutb, was executed in Egypt in 1966, one year before Israel's success in the Six-Day War made it a hate object of the Western Left.
Radical Islam is different from communism, and from what we had come to know as fascism in Europe, by its ostensibly religious character. But the Islamic revolution in Iran was like European fascism in its totalitarian domestic ambition and its violently aggressive foreign policy. It was also vehemently racist, persecuting Iranian Jews and people of the Baha'i Faith in particular. From its inception the Islamic Republic of Iran has been committed to the destruction of Israel.
The Iranian regime, which represented the Shia strand of Islam, claimed to be the centre of global Islamic revolution, fostering mentoring relationships with Shia parties and religious leaders throughout the Arab world, most notably with Hezbollah (The Party of God) in Lebanon, which Iranian agents created in 1982. Hezbollah's incumbent leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has declared Jews invented the legend of the Nazi atrocities and that Israel is a cancerous body in the region that must be uprooted. Hezbollah has carried out numerous bombings and political assassinations abroad on Iran's behalf. The most spectacular were a suicide bomber's massacre of 241 US marine peacekeepers in Lebanon in 1983, and the bombing of the Israeli embassy and Jewish cultural centre in Buenos Aires in 1994, slaughtering more than 100 Argentinian Jews.
Hezbollah also has kidnapped scores of Western journalists in Lebanon during the '80s, torturing and murdering many of them, and has assassinated Iranian opposition politicians in France and elsewhere. As we have seen recently, Hezbollah initiated conflict with Israel, then launched rockets on Israeli civilians.
Hezbollah is believed to have clandestine sleeper cells from among the Shi'ite immigrant communities throughout the Western world, including Australia. The Iranians are more ecumenical than their Sunni terrorist rivals. Iran's clients include not only Hezbollah but also, within the Sunni world, the Palestinian terrorist organisations Islamic Jihad and Hamas.
Of course, Iran is not the only locus of Islamic fascism. In 1994, a rival Islamic totalitarian regime from the Sunni branch of Islam, the Taliban, seized power in neighbouring Afghanistan.
It became the base and training area for the Sunni terrorist organisation al-Qa'ida after that organisation was expelled from Sudan.
Al-Qa'ida had been founded by Abdullah Azzam in 1988. Its explicit ambition was the destruction of existing Arab regimes and the creation of a religious caliphate in an arc stretching across the Muslim world, from Indonesia, Malaysia and The Philippines through to the Arab world and including the region of Spain known as Andalusia. Its modus operandi rests on the terror of the deed. For those who imagine that al-Qa'ida's wrath is directed only against those nations that have intervened in Iraq, one should note that it was founded 15 years before the Iraq war, at the height of Western support for the Afghan mujaheddin.
Moreover, it has attacked a French tanker in the Persian Gulf and has launched attacks in Muslim countries, notably Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan.

Os propósitos declarados do islamo-fascismo
As we know from the events of last week, al-Qa'ida's present tactic is to recruit citizens of Western countries to carry out horrendous terrorist acts in the West. In the case of Britain, the problem is that a minority of the Muslim community sympathises with the terrorists. A British Daily Telegraph poll in February on the July 7, 2005, bombings of innocents on the London Tube and bus showed that 6 per cent of British Muslims insisted the bombings were fully justified. As the poll noted: "Six per cent may be a small proportion but in absolute numbers it amounts to about 100,000 individuals who, if not prepared to carry out terrorist acts, are ready to support those who do."
By now it should be patently clear that we in the West are at war with a hydra-headed and barbaric enemy that has not a shred of humanity and relishes the bloodletting of tens of thousands of innocents, including other Muslims. It is at least as brutal as the Nazis and communist enemies we have faced in the past. Although radical Islam is not militarily as powerful as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union, it has the huge strategic advantage of suicide bombing, which is immune to deterrence.
Should any of its constituent elements -- the Iranian Government or al-Qa'ida -- acquire nuclear weapons, it will likely attempt genocide against Israel and create devastation in the West of an unprecedented kind.

Valores Morais e o Capital

"Capital is not a free gift of God or of nature. It is the outcome of a provident restriction of consumption on the part of man. It is created and increased by saving and maintained by the abstention from dissaving.

Neither have capital or capital goods in themselves the power to raise the productivity of natural resources and of human labor. Only if the fruits of saving are wisely employed or invested, do they increase the output per unit of the input of natural resources and of labor. If this is not the case, they are dissipated or wasted.

The accumulation of new capital, the maintenance of previously accumulated capital and the utilization of capital for raising the productivity of human effort are the fruits of purposive human action. They are the outcome of the conduct of thrifty people who save and abstain from dissaving, viz., the capitalists who earn interest; and of people who succeed in utilizing the capital available for the best possible satisfaction of the needs of the consumers, viz., the entrepreneurs who earn profit." The Noneconomic Objections to Capitalism
by Ludwig von Mises

A discriminação estatista

The Home of the Free: Switzerland

A ler na totalidade.

"The Home of the Free: Switzerland - LIBERTY IS NOT the natural condition of man: tyranny is. Free institutions grew up in the West as a result of hundreds of particular historical events, under the influence of classical philosophy, Judaeo-Christian theology, and Teutonic rebelliousness against authority. That is why it not easy—sometimes it is not possible—to build free societies from the ground up, however much we’d like to replace the bloody-handed regimes we see around the world with liberal democracies. This is especially true when we’re talking about countries riven by ethnic and religious differences. But when liberty grows organically, from the existing institutions of small communities, it can endure even in a potentially fragmented society—for instance, in Switzerland. In fact, I would propose Switzerland as the test case for societies seeking democratic liberty amidst diversity. From Afghanistan to South Africa, nations emerging from tyrannical regimes could find no better model. (...)"

O Direito sou Eu

The Errors Compounded: Democratic Liberalism

"Once classical liberalism had erroneously assumed the institution of government to be necessary for the maintenance of law and order, the following question arose: Which form of government is best suited for the task at hand? While the classical liberal answer to this question was by no means unanimous, it was still loud and clear. The traditional form of princely or royal government was apparently incompatible with the cherished idea of universal human rights for it was government based on privilege. Accordingly, it was ruled out. How, then, could the idea of the universality of human rights be squared with government? The liberal answer was by opening participation and entry into government on equal terms to everyone via democracy. Anyone — not just a hereditary class of nobles — was permitted to become a government official and exercise every government function.

However, this democratic equality before the law is something entirely different from and incompatible with the idea of one universal law, equally applicable to everyone, everywhere, and at all times. In fact, the former objectionable schism and inequality of the higher law of kings versus the subordinate law of ordinary subjects is fully preserved under democracy in the separation of public versus private law and the supremacy of the former over the latter. Under democracy, everyone is equal insofar as entry into government is open to all on equal terms. In a democracy no personal privileges or privileged persons exist. However, functional privileges and privileged functions exist. As long as they act in an official capacity, public officials are governed and protected by public law and thereby occupy a privileged position vis-à-vis persons acting under the mere authority of private law, most fundamentally in being permitted to support their own activities by taxes imposed on private law subjects. Privilege and legal discrimination will not disappear. To the contrary. Rather than being restricted to princes and nobles, privilege, protectionism, and legal discrimination will be available to all and can be exercised by everyone.

Predictably, then, under democratic conditions the tendency of every monopoly to increase prices and decrease quality is more pronounced. As hereditary monopolist, a king or prince regarded the territory and people under his jurisdiction as his personal property and engaged in the monopolistic exploitation of his "property." Under democracy, monopoly, and monopolistic exploitation do not disappear. Even if everyone is permitted to enter government, this does not eliminate the distinction between the rulers and the ruled. Government and the governed are not one and the same person. Instead of a prince who regards the country as his private property, a temporary and interchangeable caretaker is put in monopolistic charge of the country. The caretaker does not own the country, but as long as he is in office he is permitted to use it to his and his proteges' advantage. He owns its current use — usufruct — but not its capital stock. This does not eliminate exploitation. To the contrary, it makes exploitation less calculating, carried out with little or no regard to the capital stock. Exploitation is shortsighted and capital consumption systematically promoted." The Idea of a Private Law Society by Hans-Hermann Hoppe
