Fiat Lux. O novo blog de João Noronha.

"Crianças obrigadas a trabalhar

em vez de ir à escola."

Dizem.

How the Welfare State Corrupted Sweden, by Per Bylund.

"Old people in Sweden say that to be Swedish means to supply for your own, to take care of your self, and never be a burden on anyone else's shoulders. Independence and hard work was the common perception of a decent life, and the common perception of morality. That was less than one hundred years ago. (...)

Whereas my parents mysteriously seem to have inherited much of the "older" form of morality, most people of their age, and especially those younger, are paradigmatically different from their parents' generation. They are children of the welfare state and are fully aware of the social security benefits to which they have a "right." They don't reflect on where these benefits come from, but are skeptical towards politicians whom they believe might take them away. "Change" quickly became a bad word, since it necessarily implies a change to the system on which people are parasitically dependent.(...)

This degenerated morality and lack of understanding for the real and natural order of things is also evident in areas requiring personal responsibility and respect for fellow men and women. The elderly are now treated as ballast rather than human beings and relatives. The younger generations feel they have a "right" to not take responsibility for their parents and grandparents, and therefore demand the state relieve them of this burden.

Consequently, most elderly in Sweden either live depressed and alone in their homes, waiting for death to come their way, or they have been institutionalized in public elderly collective living facilities with 24/7 surveillance so as to alleviate the burden on the younger working generations. (...)

Perhaps this mentality explains the increasing popularity of anti-reality theories such as skepticism and post-modernism, where nothing can be taken for granted. Logic, it is claimed, is only a social construction which has no relation whatsoever with reality or the world (if it exists at all). These theories are magnificent in that they can never be proved — or disproved. (...)

The social engineers of the welfare state obviously never considered a possible change in morality and perception (...) It should be obvious that nothing came to be as expected — society simply wasn't as predictable as was predicted.(...)

The welfare state has created a dependent people utterly incapable of finding value in life; instead, they find themselves incapable of typical human feelings such as pride, honor, and empathy. These feelings, along with the means to create meaning to life, have been taken over by the welfare state.

Perhaps this explains why such a large part of the young population now consumes antidepressant medication, without which they are unable to function normally in social situations. And presumably it explains why the number of suicides among very young people who never really knew their parents is increasing dramatically (the total number of suicides remaining about the same). Still people are totally unable to see the problem or find a solution. Like spoiled children, they call for "help" through the state."

Anomia internacional e o fim do mundo

E a "direita left-neo-con-liberal" a evocar Chamberlain, Hitler, e o habitual, "somos aliados". Como sabemos "aliados" refere-se a algo mais sagrado que a razão, as escrituras e o "you shall not kill". Será o Estatismo a provocar o fim do mundo.

AnWarblog: "The Bush administration is moving aggressively from a policy aimed at neutralizing Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions to one of regime change, according to a fascinating piece by the indispensable Laura Rozen, whose blog, “War and Piece,” is one of my faves. David Denehy, of the International Republican Institute, has been put in charge of a new “Office of Iranian Affairs” set up within the State Department: he will report to Elizabeth Cheney, assistant secretary of state for Near East Affairs. Exile groups are reportedly disappointed that the cash isn’t being handed out fast enough, but one fears they haven’t got long to wait. What the future holds is laid out in pretty stark terms by Rozen, who writes:

“As much as $50 million of the funds requested will go to the Voice of America for Persian-language broadcasts. The State Department also is planning to send 15 foreign service officers to countries neighboring Iran and to capitals with large Iranian exile populations to serve as ‘Iran watchers.’

“At the Pentagon, the new Iranian directorate has been set up inside its policy shop, which previously housed the Office of Special Plans. The controversial intelligence analysis unit, established before the Iraq war, championed some of the claims of Ahmad Chalabi. A number of assertions made by the former Iraqi exile and onetime Pentagon favorite were later discredited.
“Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Barry Venable declined to name the acting director of the new Iran office and would say only that the appointee was a ‘career civil servant.’ Among those staffing or advising the Iranian directorate are three veterans of the Office of Special Plans:
Abram N. Shulsky, its former director; John Trigilio, a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst; and Ladan Archin, an Iran specialist.”

Our old friends at the “Office of Special Plans” — who channeled so much of the phony “intelligence” that ginned up the war with Iraq — are planning a little reunion, it seems. Whether these old dogs have learned some new tricks, or are just content to re-run some of the old ones, be warned: they’re back on the loose…. "

"Left and Right"?

"... Bill Kauffman is a writer who defies categorization, which is only appropriate because people who defy categorization happens to be his favorite subject: his latest book, Look Homeward, America: In Search of Reactionary Radicals and Front-Porch Anarchists, just out from ISI Books, illustrates how the tired old labels of “left” and “right” no longer seem to apply — not when ostensible “conservatives” espouse a Jacobin radicalism and exhibit an abiding faith in the power of the state to effect revolutionary transformation on a world scale. His book is a series of portraits of disparate individuals whose stubborn individualism captures the underlying spirit of the real America: from Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day, to regionalist painter Grant Wood, and including farmer-writer Wendell Berry, publisher Henry Regnery, and Senator Eugene McCarthy. These mini-biographies, taken together, add up to a patriotism more authentic than the nationalistic leader-worship and war hysteria promoted under that label by the neocons. "

"AUSTRALIAN troops were likely to stay in East Timor for at least a year, "

* Did the South Have to Fight?

* Rethinking Churchill

* World War I as the End of Civilization

* The Mises and Hayek Critiques of Modern Political State

Pelo interesse do tema: The Tension Between Economics and Religion (por um Cristão, dir-se-ia, tradicional e Libertarian - Murphy)

"Conjuntura: Energia: 44% consumidores é indiferente a aumento preços"

Vamos ver relamente o quanto vale a fantasia totalitária do auto-imposto democrático.

"The movement in favor of the formation of a federation of European states has arisen from a correct recognition of the untenability of all forms of chauvinistic nationalism. But what the supporters of this movement wish to set in its place is impracticable because it lacks a vital basis in the consciousness of the people. And even if the goal of the Pan-European movement could be achieved, the world would not be in the least the better for it. The struggle of a united European continent against the great world powers outside its territory would be no less ruinous than is the present struggle of the countries of Europe among themselves." 1927 Liberalism

"Mind you own business".

A morte do Estado-Nação

Nenhuma instituição social baseada no monopólio da violência é legitima.

Isto a propósito de
The Death of the Nation-State by Patrick J. Buchanan:

"Yugoslavia is gone, forever. The country that emerged from World War I and Versailles as the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, land of the South Slavs, has passed into history.
Sunday's vote in Montenegro, a tiny land of fewer people than the Washington, D.C., this writer grew up in, voted Sunday to secede from Belgrade, establish a nation and seek entry into the European Union.

In 1991, Macedonia peacefully seceded. Slovenia and Croatia fought their way out, and Bosnia broke free after a war marked by the massacre at Srbenica and NATO intervention. Bosnia is itself subdivided into a Serb and a Croat-Muslim sector.

After the 78-day U.S. bombing of Serbia by the United States, and the ethnic cleansing of Serbs from the province in the wake of the NATO war, Kosovo is 90 percent Muslim and Albanian. Loss of this land that was the cradle of the Serb nation seems an inevitability.

The disintegration of Yugoslavia, the second partition of Czechoslovakia and the breakup of the Soviet Union into 15 nations – many of which had never before existed – seem to confirm what Israeli historian Martin van Creveld and U.S. geostrategist William Lind have written.

The nation-state is dying. Men have begun to transfer their allegiance, loyalty and love from the older nations both upward to the new transnational regimes that are arising and downward to the sub-nations whence they came, the true nations, united by blood and soil, language, literature, history, faith, tradition and memory. (...)"

"Montenegro’s independence vote too close to callBy Neil MacDonald in Belgrade and Daniel Dombey in London Published: May 18 2006 17:52 Last updated: May 18 2006 17:52
Days before citizens of Montenegro, the last ex-Yugoslav republic still joined to Serbia, vote to decide on whether to dissolve the loose union, the European Union’s envoy says that negotiations will be needed to finalise the detailed political outcome no matter what the result.

Voters will decide on Sunday whether they want the small mountainous republic to become an independent state, a step secessionist leaders say would bring better living standards and faster integration with the EU.

But special rules for the referendum – requiring 55 per cent of the votes, instead of a simple majority, to produce a mandate for independence – have left room for bitter arguments afterwards. "

PS.

"...Certainly the most ambitious attempt to impose limits on the State has been the Bill of Rights and other restrictive parts of the American Constitution, in which written limits on government became the fundamental law to be interpreted by a judiciary supposedly independent of the other branches of government. (...)

For if a judicial decree of "unconstitutional" is a mighty check to government power, an implicit or explicit verdict of "constitutional" is a mighty weapon for fostering public acceptance of ever-greater government power. (...)

Acceptance of legitimacy becomes a particular problem in a country such as the United States, where "substantive limitations are built into the theory on which the government rests." What is needed, adds Black, is a means by which the government can assure the public that its increasing powers are, indeed, "constitutional." And this, he concludes, has been the major historic function of judicial review. (...)

Let Black illustrate the problem:

(...) A man is drafted, though he finds nothing in the Constitution about being drafted. . . . A farmer is told how much wheat he can raise; he believes, and he discovers that some respectable lawyers believe with him, that the government has no more right to tell him how much wheat he can grow than it has to tell his daughter whom she can marry(...).

In the last analysis, Black finds the achievement of justice and legitimacy from the State's perpetual judging of its own cause as "something of a miracle."[26]

Applying his thesis to the famous conflict between the Supreme Court and the New Deal, Professor Black keenly chides his fellow pro-New Deal colleagues for their shortsightedness in denouncing judicial obstruction:

(..) The upshot of the matter was [and this is what I like to emphasize] that after some twenty-four months of balking . . . the Supreme Court, without a single change in the law of its composition, or, indeed, in its actual manning, placed the affirmative stamp of legitimacy on the New Deal, and on the whole new conception of government in America.[27] (...)

Smith noted that the Constitution was designed with checks and balances to limit any one governmental power and yet had then developed a Supreme Court with the monopoly of ultimate interpreting power. If the Federal Government was created to check invasions of individual liberty by the separate states, who was to check the Federal power?(...)

The solution advanced by Calhoun (and seconded, in this century, by such writers as Smith) was, of course, the famous doctrine of the "concurrent majority." If any substantial minority interest in the country, specifically a state government, believed that the Federal Government was exceeding its powers and encroaching on that minority, the minority would have the right to veto this exercise of power as unconstitutional. Applied to state governments, this theory implied the right of "nullification" of a Federal law or ruling within a state's jurisdiction.(...)

And yet, while limitations would undoubtedly be more effective than at present, there are many difficulties and problems in the Calhoun solution. If, indeed, a subordinate interest should rightfully have a veto over matters concerning it, then why stop with the states? Why not place veto power in counties, cities, wards?(...)

This brings us to the important point that the nullification theory confines its checks to agencies of government itself. Let us not forget that federal and state governments, and their respective branches, are still states, are still guided by their own state interests rather than by the interests of the private citizens. What is to prevent the Calhoun system from working in reverse, with states tyrannizing over their citizens and only vetoing the federal government when it tries to intervene to stop that state tyranny?(...)

When Calhoun wrote that it should be "impossible to put or to keep it [the government] in action without the concurrent consent of all," he was, perhaps unwittingly, implying just such a conclusion.[31] But such speculation begins to take us away from our subject, for down this path lie political systems which could hardly be called "States" at all.[32] For one thing, just as the right of nullification for a state logically implies its right of secession, so a right of individual nullification would imply the right of any individual to "secede" from the State under which he lives.[33] (...)

We may, therefore, say with de Jouvenel:

Only those who know nothing of any time but their own, who are completely in the dark as to the manner of Power's behaving through thousands of years, would regard these proceedings [nationalization, the income tax, etc.] as the fruit of a particular set of doctrines. They are in fact the normal manifestations of Power, and differ not at all in their nature from Henry VIII's confiscation of the monasteries. The same principle is at work; the hunger for authority, the thirst for resources; and in all of these operations the same characteristics are present, including the rapid elevation of the dividers of the spoils. Whether it is Socialist or whether it is not, Power must always be at war with the capitalist authorities and despoil the capitalists of their accumulated wealth; in doing so it obeys the law of its nature.[34] " The Anatomy of the State by Murray N. Rothbard (um dos seus textos de referência).

Tom Friedman's Flexible Deadlines

Via FAIR.

New York Times foreign affairs columnist Tom Friedman is considered by many of his media colleagues to be one of the wisest observers of international affairs. (...) That confident prediction would seem a lot more insightful, however, if Friedman hadn't been making essentially the same forecast almost since the beginning of the Iraq War. A review of Friedman's punditry reveals a long series of similar do-or-die dates that never seem to get any closer:

* "The next six months in Iraq—which will determine the prospects for democracy-building there—are the most important six months in U.S. foreign policy in a long, long time."(New York Times, 11/30/03)

* "What I absolutely don't understand is just at the moment when we finally have a UN-approved Iraqi-caretaker government made up of—I know a lot of these guys—reasonably decent people and more than reasonably decent people, everyone wants to declare it's over. I don't get it. It might be over in a week, it might be over in a month, it might be over in six months, but what's the rush? Can we let this play out, please?" (NPR's Fresh Air, 6/3/04)

* "What we're gonna find out, Bob, in the next six to nine months is whether we have liberated a country or uncorked a civil war."(CBS's Face the Nation, 10/3/04)

* "Improv time is over. This is crunch time. Iraq will be won or lost in the next few months. But it won't be won with high rhetoric. It will be won on the ground in a war over the last mile."(New York Times, 11/28/04)

* "I think we're in the end game now…. I think we're in a six-month window here where it's going to become very clear and this is all going to pre-empt I think the next congressional election—that's my own feeling— let alone the presidential one."(NBC's Meet the Press, 9/25/05)

* "Maybe the cynical Europeans were right. Maybe this neighborhood is just beyond transformation. That will become clear in the next few months as we see just what kind of minority the Sunnis in Iraq intend to be. If they come around, a decent outcome in Iraq is still possible, and we should stay to help build it. If they won't, then we are wasting our time."(New York Times, 9/28/05)

* "We've teed up this situation for Iraqis, and I think the next six months really are going to determine whether this country is going to collapse into three parts or more or whether it's going to come together."(CBS's Face the Nation, 12/18/05)

* "We're at the beginning of I think the decisive I would say six months in Iraq, OK, because I feel like this election—you know, I felt from the beginning Iraq was going to be ultimately, Charlie, what Iraqis make of it." (PBS's Charlie Rose Show, 12/20/05)

* "The only thing I am certain of is that in the wake of this election, Iraq will be what Iraqis make of it—and the next six months will tell us a lot. I remain guardedly hopeful."(New York Times, 12/21/05)

* "I think that we're going to know after six to nine months whether this project has any chance of succeeding. In which case, I think the American people as a whole will want to play it out or whether it really is a fool's errand." (Oprah Winfrey Show, 1/23/06)

* "I think we're in the end game there, in the next three to six months, Bob. We've got for the first time an Iraqi government elected on the basis of an Iraqi constitution. Either they're going to produce the kind of inclusive consensual government that we aspire to in the near term, in which case America will stick with it, or they're not, in which case I think the bottom's going to fall out."(CBS, 1/31/06)

But if they don't, then I think the bottom is going to fall out of public support here for the whole Iraq endeavor. So one way or another, I think we're in the end game in the sense it's going to be decided in the next weeks or months whether there's an Iraq there worth investing in. And that is something only Iraqis can tell us."(CNN, 4/23/06)

Spending Freedom Day?

A Critique of the Legal and Philosophical Case for Rent Control, por Walter Block.

ABSTRACT. Rent control is an economic abomination. It diverts investments away from residential rent units, it leads to their deterioration, it is responsible for urban decay such as in the South Bronx, it does not help poor tenants, it is a horrendous means of income redistribution. Yet this economic regulation is beloved of intellectuals (hot beds of pro rent control sentiment are Berkeley, Ann Arbor and
Cambridge) particularly in the legal and philosophical communities. The present article is dedicated to an exploration and rejection of the arguments on behalf of rent control which emanate from this source.

Bill Kaufman e o seu notável livro

""Look Homeward, America: In Search of Reactionary Radicals and Front-Porch Anarchists"

Bill Kauffman is the author of five books, most recently the localist manifesto "Dispatches from the Muckdog Gazette", which won the 2003 national “Sense of Place” award from Writers & Books. His other books include a novel, a travel book, and works about American isolationists and critics of progress. He writes for the Wall Street Journal, the American Enterprise, Counterpunch, and the American Conservative, among other publications."

"I am an American patriot. A Jeffersonian decentralist. A fanatical localist. And I am an anarchist. (...)

Reactionary radicals” are those Americans whose political radicalism (often inspired by the principles of 1776 and the culture of the early America) is combined with—in fact, flows from—a deep-set social “conservatism.” These are not radicals who wish to raze venerable institutions and make them anew: they are, in fact, at antipodes from the warhead-clutching egghead described by (the reactionary radical) Robert Lee Frost:

With him the love of country means
Blowing it all to smithereens
And having it all made over new
Look Homeward, America

These reactionary radicals—a capacious category in which I include Dorothy Day, Carolyn Chute, Grant Wood, Eugene McCarthy, Wendell Berry, and a host of other cultural and political figures—have sought to tear down what is artificial, factitious, imposed by remote and often coercive forces and instead cultivate what is local, organic, natural, and family-centered. In our almost useless political taxonomy, some are labeled “right wing” and others are tucked away on the left, but in fact they are kin: embodiments of an American cultural-political tendency that is wholesome, rooted, and based in love of family, community, local self-rule, and a respect for permanent truths. We find them not at the clichéd “bloody crossroads” but at thrillingly fruitful conjunctions: think Robert Nisbet by way of Christopher Lasch, or Russell Kirk by way of Paul Goodman. Think, always, of things tending homeward.

My favorite America is the America of holy fools and backyard radicals, the America whose eccentric voice is seldom heard anymore in the land of Clear Channel, Disney, and Gannett. It is the America of third parties, of Greenbackers and Libertarians and village atheists and the “conservative Christian anarchist” party whose founder and only member was Henry Adams.(...)

I celebrate, I affirm old-fashioned refractory Americanism, the homeloving rebel spirit that inspires anarchists and reactionaries to save chestnut trees from the highway-wideners and rural schools from the monstrous maw of the consolidators, and leads along the irenic path of a fresh-air patriotism whose opposition to war and empire is based in simple love of country.

(...)

Now, I do not claim to be the archetypal American. If my ethnic mix is typically mongrel, stretching from Italy to Ireland, so are my politics a blend of Catholic Worker, Old Right libertarian, Yorker transcendentalist, and delirious localist. So my story is singular but also strangely representative. We live in an age in which Americans by the millions have lost faith in a system that seems, at best, alien, and at worst, repressive. I, too, started in the mainstream, but I found it placidly sinister, so I took a trip down the tributaries, left and right and great plunging cataracts, till I found that my faith in the oldest, simplest, most radical America had been renewed. Robert Frost put his faith in the “insubordinate Americans,” throaty dissenters and ornery traditionalists, and this book is for and about them—those Americans who reject Empire; who cherish the better America, the real America; who cannot be broken by the Department of Homeland Security, who will not submit to the PATRIOT Act, and who will make the land acrid and bright with the stench and flame of burnt national ID cards when we—should we—cross that Orwellian pass. This is still our country, you know. Don’t let Big Brother and the imperialists take it from us."

"31. Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul “I am a Patriot” and “Undefeated”–the latter a great isolationist anthem (”And there ain’t no peace with honor baby/No matter what you hear/Ain’t no peace with honor baby/Until we disappear”)"

ou

"*I never listened much to Metallica, but I do like this description of the band’s James Hetfield: “An avid hunter, he is a member of the National Rifle Association, as well as of Ducks Unlimited, an organization dedicated to the preservation of wetlands. He admits to being patriotic, but he has never voted. Politically, he’s a defiantly individual mix of right-of-center values with a strong dislike of rules—kind of a conservative anarchist.” Rolling Stone, April 15, 1993"

A Professor of English at Boston College puts his money - literally - where his mouth is.

"I am doing so -- after five years at BC, and with tremendous regret -- as a direct result of your decision to invite Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to be the commencement speaker at this year's graduation.

Many members of the faculty and student body already have voiced their objection to the invitation, arguing that Rice's actions as secretary of state are inconsistent with the broader humanistic values of the university and the Catholic and Jesuit traditions from which those values derive.

But I am not writing this letter simply because of an objection to the war against Iraq. My concern is more fundamental. Simply put, Rice is a liar." Karen De Coster

3. Definam-me lá "manipulação".

O Direito Natural segundo D. António Ferreira Gomes

1. Existe uma receita presente.
2. Existem beneficiários com contribuiçoes passadas.

Estatismo Internacionalista

"Averting a humanitarian catastrophe was NATO's stated justification for bombing Serbia and its Kosovo province in 1999. But initial successes quickly succumbed to the reverse ethnic cleansing of more than 200,000 Serbs and other minorities by Albanian militants.

Now, despite seven years of U.N. policing and donor largess, Kosovo's remaining minorities still live in fear, and the economy and infrastructure remain in shambles.

Behind their façade of optimism, Western leaders negotiating Kosovo's future status are panicking. Realizing that Albanians will violently contest any continued affiliation with Serbia, they believe independence alone can ensure peace. Yet Kosovo is a classic quagmire, one with ominous repercussions for peace.

Deciding Kosovo's rightful ownership is difficult. It pits two peoples, and two hallowed principles, against each another. Albanians - 90 percent of the population - invoke self-determination to justify independence. Yet Serbian cultural legacy goes back seven centuries in Kosovo, which was only independent when Adolf Hitler's Albanian allies briefly enjoyed their Nazi puppet state. Further, U.N. Resolution 1244 in 1999 affirmed Yugoslav sovereignty. (...)

Ordem, Liberdade e... Aviões

"We read in Wired the supremely interesting saga of how airlines are experimenting with new ways of seating people. The point is to minimize the struggles between passengers. It was once thought that seating from back to front is the best way. But some experts have found that just by letting people board and find any seat, passengers work out their own difficulties and get situated. Other people who have studied this recommend a "reverse pyramid" method of seating people.

What's the goal? To speed up boarding. That makes more flights possible, improves profitability, and leads to lower prices. All of this is good for the consumer. Who wouldn't want to shave off time that one has to spend hanging around airports?." MisesBlog

Carta do Irão

Filmes "Anti-War "

* Sobre Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (já aqui comentado anteriormento por LAS)

"This program of demonization pushed any inconvenient facts from the popular consciousness (and, of course, made the fire-bombing of German cities a bit more palatable). Thus today few Americans know of the nearly successful July 20 Plot of 1944 by Colonel Stauffenberg and other German officers to assassinate Hitler. Still fewer know of German student and youth opposition to the war and the Nazi regime.

In The German Opposition to Hitler, Hans Rothfels reports that a Gestapo officer testified in 1939 that over 2,000 boys and girls were organized into opposition to the Third Reich. Rothfels also notes that the concentration camp at Neuweid was reserved exclusively for teenage boys.

There was even a campus riot of sorts on January 13, 1943. In a speech to university students in Munich, the Gauleiter of Bavaria took female students to task for wasting their time in the classroom when they should be performing their duty to bring forth sons for the Fatherland.(...)

The new film, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, Germany’s 2005 Oscar nominee for best foreign language film, recounts this fateful event and the interrogation, trial and executions that followed within 72 hours. (...)

When the police inspector tells her, “The law protects order,” Sophie replies, “People are imprisoned for speaking freely. Is that order?”(...)

In her is an abiding sense of a higher justice and loyalty to country above government. In the clutches of the Gestapo and isolated from her companions, she does not waver from principle nor retreat from what a patriot of another land called “the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country.”

One of her leaflets had promised, “We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!” Even in the face of death, Sophie keeps her word. When the Goebbels-like presiding judge pronounces her sentence, Sophie calmly answers, “You'll soon be standing where I am now.”

Yet the most unsettling scene in Sophie Scholl is not the interrogation or the show trial or the execution by guillotine. No, the most disturbing moment comes when Sophie is read her indictment.

Her distribution of mimeographed pamphlets, says the prosecutor, is an act of “troop demoralization and aiding the enemy.” It is a “crime against our hard-fighting troops.”

That is when this film should hit home with American audiences. Or at least with those who are not mere puppets." The German Anti-War Movement, 1943 by David Rosinger

Inflation is back again

"Inflation is back again, an incredible development considering the hard experiences we and the rest of the world had with this debilitating disease from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Inflationary symptoms are already rampant in the commodities market. Gold, oil, copper and other items are approaching or exceeding rates of price increase not seen for a quarter of a century. In the months ahead inflation will spread through the rest of the economy here and overseas.

(...) For 4,000 years gold has been the best barometer of inflation, the Polaris of stable money. In the late 1960s it jumped after decades of stability, and inflation soon followed. The same phenomenon repeated itself in the early 1970s, when gold soared, and again when it roared ahead in the late 1970s. Each rise was followed by a disastrous round of generally rising prices and ever higher interest rates--and each ended in a recession. Today the price of what Keynes called the barbarous relic is the highest it's been since 1980, up 150% from its 2001 lows.

(...) Sadly, the Fed's new boss, Ben Bernanke, fully disdains gold as a useful monetary tool, sharing John Maynard Keynes' prejudice against the yellow metal. Like most of his economist peers Bernanke thinks that the traditional gold standard, which governed monetary policy in Great Britain and eventually elsewhere from the early 1700s to the 1930s, caused or at least deepened the Great Depression. " Forbes

"...end up like the British Empire"

"(...) [N]o one can justify actions that undermine the territorial integrity of a neighbor," declared Cheney in Vilnius. How the vice president could deliver that line with a straight face escapes me.

Does Cheney not recall our "Captive Nations Resolutions," calling for the liberation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which, though free between the two world wars, had long belonged to the Russian empire? Does he not recall conservative support for the breakup of the Soviet Union? Does he not recall conservative support for the secession of Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia, and more recently Kosovo, from a Serb-dominated Yugoslavia?

What concerns Cheney is Moscow's support for the secession of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia. Georgia's president was also elected with the aid of pro-democracy NGOs, mostly funded by Uncle Sam. All these color-coded revolutions in East Europe and Central Asia bear the label, Made in the U.S.A.

When Cheney says, "No one can justify actions that … interfere with democratic movements," he is hauling water for Freedom House, headed by ex-CIA Director James Woolsey, and similar agencies, which Putin wants shut down or kicked out of Russia for interfering in her internal affairs.

We Americans consider the Monroe Doctrine – no foreign power is to come into our hemisphere – to be holy writ. Why, then, can we not understand why Russia might react angrily to our interference in her politics or the politics of former Russian republics?

The effect of U.S. expansion of NATO deep into Eastern Europe, U.S. interference in the politics of the former Soviet republics, and U.S. siting of military bases in the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia has been to unite Russia and China, and undo the diplomacy of several successive U.S. presidents.

How has this made us more secure?

If we don't want these people in our backyard, what are we doing in theirs? If we don't stop behaving like the British Empire, we will end up like the British Empire". Why Are We Baiting Putin? by Patrick J. Buchanan

Nada disto parece incomodar a "mitologia" aliada.

Sinais

CHRISTIAN EXODUS

ChristianExodus.org is moving thousands of Christians to South Carolina to reestablish constitutionally limited government founded upon Christian principles. It is evident that the U.S. Constitution has been abandoned under our current federal system, and the efforts of Christian activism to restore our Godly republic have proven futile over the past three decades. The time has come for Christian Constitutionalists to protect our liberties in a State like South Carolina by interposing the State's sovereign authority retained under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The foundations of the United States of America were laid upon these principles, that the rights of man are God-given and inviolate, that the sole purpose of government is to secure these rights, and that the only just powers of government are those specifically delegated by the people. The federal government is restrained by Constitutional Law, the Sovereign States, and the Citizens of those States, each one made in the image of God, with individual rights to life, liberty, and property.

The federal government was created to protect us from the very tyranny it now practices against us...

We are violated in our right to Life:

Unborn babies are subject to slaughter by abortionists and their own mothers under any pretext whatsoever.

The elderly, infirm, and disabled are subject to forced starvation and involuntary euthanasia. 1
Citizens are subjected to the perils of imperialist entanglements abroad, and left unprotected from alien invaders at home.

We are violated in our right to Liberty:

Abortion continues against the wishes of many States and in violation of the reserved powers of the States under the 10th Amendment.

Christians are denied their rights to free speech, freedom of the press, the display of religious monuments, and other expressions of faith in the public sphere. 1 2 3

Citizens are denied their rights to keep and bear arms sufficient for the restraint of tyranny.
Men, women, and children are involuntarily exposed to the corrupting influences of homosexuality, pornography, and other perversities protected and financed by the national government.

Sodomy is now legal and celebrated as "diversity" by order of the U.S. Supreme Court rather than condemned as perversion. Another usurpation of the rights of the States by the federal government.

Families are subject to the trauma of no-fault divorce, often used to unjustly deny fathers equal protection under law and fundamental family rights.

Children are seized from good parents arbitrarily and under false pretexts, and placed in the care of the state, as driven by federal funding.

Federal courts prevent children in public schools from freely practicing Christianity.
Children who pray in public schools are subject to prosecution.
1

Federal expenditures on education are unconstitutional and promote revisionist history and statist sociology. Our schools continue to teach the discredited theory of Darwinian evolution. 1

We are violated in our right to Property:

Private property is subject to unreasonable restrictions upon use and development by illegal federal environmental and zoning regulations.

Private homes may now be arbitrarily seized by government for any reason whatsoever.

Private commerce is restricted by overbearing and unwarranted government regulation and taxation.

Citizens are taxed without their consent in ways that are unjust, unreasonable, and contrary to the public welfare.

Christians have seen and known all these things, and yet we have been unable to stem the tide against our liberties and our families. The Republican Party, which once promised to reduce the overbearing size of government, after gaining the reigns of power has expanded government to unprecedented reaches. Attempts at reform have proven futile for over three decades, and do not hold promise at the national level since Republicans and Democrats alike have abandoned regard for the Constitution and the proper role of government. ChristianExodus.org offers the opportunity to try a strategy not yet employed by millions of Christian conservatives who are geographically spread out and diluted at the national level. If we really mean to return to the Christian principles of constitutional American government, we must start at the local level and accelerate the process through mass migration.

This is the Christian Exodus.

ChristianExodus.org is orchestrating the move of thousands of Christians to reacquire our Constitutional rights by electing State and local officials who will interpose on behalf of the people and refuse to enforce illegal federal acts. Click on our Plan of Action page to find out how we can experience God-honoring governance once again.

"Something has gone wrong"

"Something has gone wrong: the right wing has been captured and transformed by elitists and devotees of the European conservative ideals of order and militarism, by witch hunters and global crusaders, by statists who wish to coerce "morality" and suppress "sedition."

America was born in a revolution against Western imperialism, born as a haven of freedom against the tyrannies and despotism, the wars and intrigues of the old world. Yet we have allowed ourselves to sacrifice the American ideals of peace and freedom and anti-colonialism on the altar of a crusade to kill communists throughout the world; we have surrendered our libertarian birthright into the hands of those who yearn to restore the Golden Age of the Holy Inquisition. It is about time that we wake up and rise up to restore our heritage." Rothbard, 1968

Democracia versus Liberdade

"(...) Whatever its virtues, democracy is not freedom. As the 19th-century French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville warned in his classic Democracy in America, a democracy can be just as tyrannical as a dictatorship once the voters decide to vote themselves money from the treasury.

Democracy is a method of deciding who shall rule. It does not determine the morality of the resulting government. At best, democracy means that government has popular support. But popular support is no guarantee that government will protect your freedom.

Conceived in liberty, not in democracy

America’s Founders were well aware of the evils of pure democracy and wisely made the United States a limited constitutional republic in which individual rights were strongly protected.

The word “democracy” does not appear either in the Declaration of Independence or in the U.S. Constitution. Instead, Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution guarantees “to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government.”

Is democracy necessary for freedom?

While democracy doesn’t guarantee either freedom or peace, there are many historical examples of societies that didn’t have either elections or legislatures, but in which people’s rights were strongly protected.

Examples include the American colonies before the Revolutionary War ... the American West in the 19th century, where violence was one-tenth of what it is in large U.S. cities today ... many cantons in Switzerland today, which have little government ... and the nations of Andorra and Monaco.

In fact, for centuries much of the world had law and order without legislatures or elected rulers. Instead they had what might be called “free-market justice” provided by traveling judges adjudicating disputes, with decisions enforced by local communities and sheriffs.

This nonelectoral legal system (explained in the book, The Enterprise of Law, by Bruce L. Benson) created what is today known as “the common law” – thousands of collected decisions that provide the basis for law in America, Europe, and much of the free world."

Democracy Versus Freedom by Jarret B. Wollstein (que cita James Madison: "Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and conflict; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.")

Bruxelas

* Persegue a Microsoft

Note-se (na "Atlântico")

* O estimado colega Luciano Amaral esgrima valentemente argumentos pró-Iraque (for what? só para dizer o contrário do BE?).
