Alguém consegue ter um discurso coerente sobre o que é certo ou errado nesta situação em particular, e sobre o que é certo ou errado fazer a "comunidade internacional" ou os US? Ou a ONU, a Nato?

China Steps Up Talk of Taiwan Attack Before Chen's Inauguration

May 19 (Bloomberg) -- China stepped up threats of attack against Taiwan a day before President Chen Shui-bian's inauguration, saying it would be willing to forfeit strong U.S. ties, economic growth and the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to quash independence moves by force.

``The mainland is ready to afford a slowdown in its modernization bid, a reversion in Sino-U.S. ties and the boycott of the Olympic Games,'' government-owned China Daily quoted Xu Bodong, director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies at Beijing United University, as saying.

Beijing said Monday it will ``crush'' any Taiwan steps toward independence ``firmly and thoroughly'' at any cost. ``It's the most toughly worded statement the Chinese government has made yet to halt Chen's attempts to separate Taiwan from China,'' Zhu Weidong, an assistant fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told a press briefing in Beijing organized by the State Council, China's cabinet.

China and Taiwan, ruled by separate governments since the end of a civil war between the Nationalists and the communists in 1949, have been at loggerheads for half a century on who has sovereignty over the island. China says it's a renegage Chinese province; Taiwan says it doesn't recognize communist authority.

Nationhood?

Chen rankled China in his first term by spurning the ``one- China policy'' and calling Taiwan a separate sovereign state. China has accused Chen of engineering moves toward independence through proposals to amend the constitution. The U.S., European Union, Japan and all but 26 countries in the world recognize China as the legitimate ruler of Taiwan. (...)"
