Bush em Londres

“The failure of democracy in Iraq would throw its people back into misery and turn that country over to terrorists who wish to destroy us”

"In a friendly jab at France, Bush noted how a 14-point plan for peace that President Woodrow Wilson took to Britain in 1918 was met with skepticism by the prime minister of France, who complained then that even God himself “only had 10 commandments.”

"Bush invoked Europe’s history of appeasement of dictators, reminding his audience of the critical work the Allies did to set postwar Germany on the path to democracy"

Through the Society, Röpke was able to meet with and influence the thinking of Ludwig Erhard, economic minister and Chancellor of West Germany. Erhard later revealed that during World War II he was able to illegally obtain Röpke's books, which he "devoured like the desert the life-giving water." The product of Röpke's influence on Erhard has been tagged the post-WW II "German Economic Miracle," although Röpke pointed out that the economic success experienced by West Germany was not a miracle at all; it was the result of adopting correct social and legal institutions fostering the market economy. Looking back at the West German economic policies of the 1950s, he lamented that free market reforms had not gone far enough.

"A supernational or multinational government is not likely to embrace the liberal ideal because a political regime insulates itself from the people it rules. It grows increasingly oppressive and corrupt, raising up welfare states and trampling on private property. For this reason, the centralization of decision-making power is incompatible with free market economies. As the alternative, Röpke embraced the 19th century "universalist-liberal" solution to the problem of an international order: vibrant commerce between politically autonomous small states. In order to allow for international trade to take place, a truly international monetary system is necessary. Instead of a world-wide currency, national currencies backed by a non-political gold standard should serve as the arbiter of exchange."

"The decentralization of the political process, Röpke argued, is incompatible with mass democracy. Under democracy, politicians are prone to be swayed by masses of privately interested voters, so that the economic system degenerates into a spoils system where the victors are the mass that can muster 51 per cent of the vote. Such a system only serves to bring about and legitimize centralized power. The only legitimate government is a government by rulers that are widely recognized as competent and socially beneficial. If the political system is decentralized, those that are the most capable and are recognized as possessing the most integrity would be those who the various locales would allow to rule for any length of time. "

Dollar Trades Near Record Low Versus Euro

Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar traded near a record low against the euro in Asia after net foreign purchases of U.S. securities slumped to the least in five years.

A drop in the amount of securities bought by international investors makes it harder for the U.S. to finance its current- account deficit, the broadest measure of trade and investment. The dollar also declined after the U.S., which has a record trade deficit with China, said it will limit some Chinese imports.

Noticias do dia

China renews Taiwan threat of war: For the first time since 2000, Beijing has threatened to use force against Taiwan should the island's pro-independence movement continue to escalate.

Gold soars above $400: Spot gold has broken above $400 an ounce for the first time since March 1996 on a weakening U.S. dollar and global security worries.

"The beastly British", Roger Scruton no The Spectator

In peddling royal scandals, says Roger Scruton, newspapers are appealing to the depraved imagination of the public. We are guilty of collective treason.

Should we blame the butler? The tittle-tattlers of the royal household? The newspaper editors, the BBC, the general public? The cultural climate, British hypocrisy, the decadence of modern society, the Internet, the Decline of the West? Or should we blame the Prince, for something we know not what? These questions, which have filled the air during a week of futile hysteria are exactly the questions that should not be asked. There is a simple response to factitious scandals like the one that we have been living through, which is that it is none of your business.

If the rumour is false, then you should not be interested. If it is true, then you should be interested even less. The wrongdoing, for proof of which you search the newspaper and the Google-box, is yours.

Paleo Conservative: Paul Craig Roberts

"In the case of the US invasion of Iraq, all checks and balances failed. The government failed, the media failed, the experts failed, and the UN and US allies failed. This universal failure made possible an act of imbecility that every informed person (a small part of the population) recognizes as a strategic blunder.

Nothing positive has been achieved by invading Iraq. A fortune has been wasted, thousands of people have been killed and injured, a government destroyed and a country laid waste and left ripe for civil war, terrorism encouraged, credibility and good will squandered.

Can Americans disconnect from neocon propaganda and smell the truth? Or have Americans succumbed to propaganda’s reassuring embrace, secure in delusions that motives are pure, virtue is untarnished and successes certain?"

Re: Pedro Lomba

Já fui informado pelo Mises: "Your score is: 98 out of 100".

"A French merchant shipped $50,000 worth of goods to New Orleans and sold them for a profit of $17,000. He invested the entire $67,000 in United States cotton and brought it back to France. Thus the customshouse record showed that the French nation had imported more than it exported -- an unfavorable balance of trade. Very bad."

"At a later date, the merchant decided to repeat that personally profitable transaction. But just outside the harbor, his ship was sunk by a storm. Thus the customhouse record showed that the French nation had exported more products than it had imported -- a favorable balance of trade. Very good. And in addition, more jobs were thereby created for the shipbuilders."

"But since storms at sea are undpendable, perhaps the safest government policy would be to record the exports at the customhouse and then throw the goods into the ocean. In that way, the nation could guarantee to itself the profit that results from a favorable balance of trade."

--Complete Works of Bastiat, vol. 5, pp. 363-368.

Re: Protests begin but majority backs Bush visit as support for war surges

Uma vez que a pergunta parece ter sido se "agree with the idea that America is the "evil empire" in the world.

Ainda Democracia, Monarquia e Natural Order

"Imagine a world government, democratically elected according to the principle of one-man-one-vote on a world wide scale. What would the probable outcome of an election be? Most likely, we would get a Chinese-Indian coalition government. And what would this government most likely decide to do in order to satisfy its supporters and be reelected? The government would probably find that the so-called Western world had far too much wealth and the rest of the world, in particular China and India, had far too little, and hence, that a systematic wealth and income redistribution would be called for. Or imagine, for your own country, that the right to vote were expanded to seven year olds. While the government would not likely be made up of children, its policies would most definitely reflect the 'legitimate concerns' of children to have 'adaequate' and 'equal' access to 'free' hamburgers, lemonade, and videos."

Fox News, Weekly Standard e o Office of Special Plans

Disclaimer: estritamente pessoal (como todos, de resto).

De hoje mesmo:

Today, Fox News anchors are repeatedly mentioning the blockbuster story "proving" a long-time link between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

The leak was made to a truly unbiased source, the Weekly Standard. The neocon magazine titles the article on the "leaked" memo, "Case Closed."

The memo is from another unbiased source: Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith, one of the most hard-core neoconservatives at the Pentagon.

At one point, a Fox reporter referred to the Weekly Standard as having "close ties to the White House." You would think that they might mention that Fox and the Weekly Standard are both owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Current and retired intel officers have identified the work of Feith's Office of Special Plans as a key component of the exaggerated and manipulated intelligence produced on Iraq. Feith himself has been accused of being behind previous leaks of "raw intelligence."

I wonder who "leaked" this memo to the Weekly Standard?

O problema é que...:

The Dept. of Defense has issued a news release dismissing the report.

"News reports that the Defense Department recently confirmed new information with respect to contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq in a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee are inaccurate."

"Identity crisis", Paul Robinson no The Spectator

"For decades Britons have defined themselves precisely as the sort of people who do not have to carry ID cards. We are a free people. The dictatorial regimes of the Continent can do that sort of thing, but we do not. Forcing us to prove our identity alters the relationship between state and citizen. It proves that the state does not trust us to be who we say we are. In a democracy, the state which we elect should assume that we are honest, not that we are dishonest. In doing the latter, it insults our sense of personal dignity. This may be an irrational response. There may be no good reason for us to feel that way. But we do, and the state should respect it. It is who we are. Blair and Blunkett seem to want to turn us all into Belgians. Much though I like my new neighbours, that is not something I wish to be. "

O debate apareceu com a proposta em: In a provocative essay in the New York Review of Books (October 23), “Israel: The Alternative,” New York University historian Tony Judt :Abandoning the nation-state ideal: “The time has come to think the unthinkable… a single, integrated, binational state of Jews and Arabs, Israelis and Palestinians.”

Logo se ouviu na "NRO, David Frum accused Judt of “genocidal liberalism,” noting “one must hate Israel very much in deed to prefer such an outcome [a binational state] to the reality of liberal democracy that exists in Israel today.”

"Yet this is the Frum who notoriously raged against Sam Francis in “Unpatriotic Conservatives” (NRO, March 19, 2003) for advocating “a politics devoted to the protection of the interests of what he [Francis] called the ‘Euro-American cultural core’ of the American nation.

Most interestingly, despite his appeal to current trends in the West, Judt actually wants something quite different for Israel. In a “binational” state, there are two continuing nationalities. But Judt approves of modern Europe because it consists of “pluralist states which have long since become multiethnic and multicultural. “Christian Europe," pace M. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, is a dead letter; Western civilization today is a patchwork of colors and religions and languages…”

Paul Gottfried acaba asim:

Judt equates “democracy” with multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism. As a political theorist for many years, I remain astonished by this already ritualistic association. Why does being “democratic” require opening one’s borders and welcoming in a cultural “patchwork?”

Certainly this requirement would have struck Aristotle, Rousseau, Montesquieu, and Thomas Jefferson as disconcerting. These political thinkers assumed a high degree of homogeneity as essential for popular self-government.

I believe that American Zionists should be reconsidering their inconsistent positions, instead of ganging up on Judt. Abe Foxman and the Anti-Defamation League, for example, make themselves ridiculous and vulnerable when they denounce those who oppose the granting of drivers licenses in California to illegal immigrants as far-right anti-Semites—while they simultaneously defend Israel as a “Jewish state.”

Tony Judt’s politics are not mine. I believe that Israel should remain predominantly Jewish and that the U.S. and Europe should remain predominantly Euro-American—and I support whatever is necessary to achieve these objectives

But, unlike his hysterical opponents, Judt believes that what is sauce for the Christian West must also be (more or less) sauce for Israel. He is at least an honest Jewish liberal.

Nota: óbviamente, aqui "liberal" representa a esquerda americana.

Monarquia, Republica e Democracia

Fica um pedaço do texto: Democracy: The God That Failed, by Hans-Hermann Hoppe

(...)
The second myth concerns the historic transition from absolute monarchies to democratic states. Not only do neoconservatives interpret this development as progress; there is near-universal agreement that democracy represents an advance over monarchy and is the cause of economic and moral progress. This interpretation is curious in light of the fact that democracy has been the fountainhead of every form of socialism: of (European) democratic socialism and (American) liberalism and neo-conservatism as well as of international (Soviet) socialism, (Italian) fascism, and national (Nazi) socialism. More importantly, however, theory contradicts this interpretation; whereas both monarchies and democracies are deficient as states, democracy is worse than monarchy.

Theoretically speaking, the transition from monarchy to democracy involves no more or less than a hereditary monopoly "owner" – the prince or king – being replaced by temporary and interchangeable – monopoly "caretakers" – presidents, prime ministers, and members of parliament. Both kings and presidents will produce bads, yet a king, because he "owns" the monopoly and may sell or bequeath it, will care about the repercussions of his actions on capital values. As the owner of the capital stock on "his" territory, the king will be comparatively future-oriented. In order to preserve or enhance the value of his property, he will exploit only moderately and calculatingly. In contrast, a temporary and interchangeable democratic caretaker does not own the country, but as long as he is in office he is permitted to use it to his advantage. He owns its current use but not its capital stock. This does not eliminate exploitation. Instead, it makes exploitation shortsighted (present-oriented) and uncalculated, i.e., carried out without regard for the value of the capital stock.

Nor is it an advantage of democracy that free entry into every state position exists (whereas under monarchy entry is restricted by the king's discretion). To the contrary, only competition in the production of goods is a good thing. Competition in the production of bads is not good; in fact, it is sheer evil. Kings, coming into their position by virtue of birth, might be harmless dilettantes or decent men (and if they are "madmen," they will be quickly restrained or if need be, killed, by close relatives concerned with the possessions of the dynasty).

In sharp contrast, the selection of government rulers by means of popular elections makes it essentially impossible for a harmless or decent person to ever rise to the top. Presidents and prime ministers come into their position as a result of their efficiency as morally uninhibited demagogues. Hence, democracy virtually assures that only dangerous men will rise to the top of government.

In particular, democracy is seen as promoting an increase in the social rate of time preference (present-orientation) or the "infantilization" of society. It results in continually increased taxes, paper money and paper money inflation, an unending flood of legislation, and a steadily growing "public" debt. By the same token, democracy leads to lower savings, increased legal uncertainty, moral relativism, lawlessness, and crime. Further, democracy is a tool for wealth and income confiscation and redistribution. It involves the legislative "taking" of the property of some – the haves of something – and the "giving" of it to others – the have-nots of things. And since it is presumably something valuable that is being redistributed – of which the haves have too much and the have-nots too little – any such redistribution implies that the incentive to be of value or produce something valuable is systematically reduced. In other words, the proportion of not-so-good people and not-so-good personal traits, habits, and forms of conduct and appearance will increase, and life in society will become increasingly unpleasant.

Last but not least, democracy is described as resulting in a radical change in the conduct of war. Because they can externalize the costs of their own aggression onto others (via taxes), both kings and presidents will be more than 'normally' aggressive and warlike. However, a king's motive for war is typically an ownership-inheritance dispute. The objective of his war is tangible and territorial: to gain control over some piece of real estate and its inhabitants. And to reach this objective it is in his interest to distinguish between combatants (his enemies and targets of attack) and non-combatants and their property (to be left out of the war and undamaged). Democracy has transformed the limited wars of kings into total wars. The motive for war has become ideological – democracy, liberty, civilization, humanity. The objectives are intangible and elusive: the ideological "conversion" of the losers preceded by their "unconditional" surrender (which, because one can never be certain about the sincerity of conversion, may require such means as the mass murder of civilians). And the distinction between combatants and non-combatants becomes fuzzy and ultimately disappears under democracy, and mass war involvement – the draft and popular war rallies – as well as "collateral damage" become part of war strategy.

CARL SCHMITT e Leo Strauss

Carlo Stagnaro a Vittorio Messori.

* Sobre Vittorio Messori:

Catholic author, who is as keen an observer of reality as he is disenchanted by it. Messori is motivated by a deep Christian realism, which emanates from virtually every line of his last book, Gli occhi di Maria (Mary’s Eyes), written in co-operation with Rino Cammilleri and published in Italy by Rizzoli. He also authored Jesus Hypotheses and the famous Crossing the Threshold of Hope, with Pope John Paul II.

* Carlo Stagnaro co-edits the libertarian magazine "Enclave"

Pergunta de Carlo Stagnaro: Carl Schmitt said the state is born from the secularization of theological concepts, and therefore it is a competing entity, an enemy of religions. What do you think about that?

I agree. See, I understand many of the reasons of the modern anarchists, and I recognize myself in many of the positions of the FORCES organization and the libertarian magazine Enclave. But, I repeat, I believe in original sin, thus I do not underestimate Hobbes’ warning: homo homini lupus (that is, man is the wolf of men). I respect law enforcement officers, because I know I need them; however, do not ask me to love them! I think that the monster state is the Beast of the Apocalypse. In a perspective of faith, the state emerging from the end of the ancien régime horrifies me. In this key, my nightmare is One World Government.

Straussians vs. Paleoconservatives, Paul Gottfried

...Cultural Marxists provide a key to grasping the substance and fictions of managerial tyranny, Straussians have created a defense of such tyranny, disguised as global democracy or as standing up for "values." In short, while critical theory can help one to look more deeply into leftist mechanisms of control and global democratic agitprop, the Straussians have worked to justify and misrepresent such control. In the language of Antonio Gramsci, whose thinking overlapped that of the Frankfurt School, Straussians predictably defend the "hegemonic ideology" associated with the ruling class. They are also heavily, indeed obscenely, rewarded defenders of that ruling class, holding high places in leftist academic institutions, in the government bureaucracy, and in bogus conservative "thinktanks."

Constituições e Estado Federal. Ecos da História para a Europa?

Implied or Usurped?

Whenever Congress wrangles about the Federal budget and deficits, I have the same futile thought: Why don’t they just stop spending money unconstitutionally?

Two of the biggest items in the budget, for example, are Social Security and Medicare. The U.S. Constitution doesn’t authorize either program.

If you read the Constitution, you’ll find the legislative powers of Congress carefully enumerated. These powers, fewer than two dozen, don’t include welfare spending.

Thomas Jefferson was deeply suspicious of the whole notion of implied powers; he saw clearly where it might lead.

The greatest usurper of power in American history was Abraham Lincoln. By denying the right of states to secede and equating secession with “rebellion,” he enabled himself, at a stroke, to claim countless implied powers. As his defender Harry V. Jaffa puts it, “No president before him had ever discovered the reservoir of constitutional power within [the] presidential oath.”

in Lincoln’s mind, “preserving the Constitution,” he felt justified in making war on the states, raising armies and money on his own initiative, arresting elected officials, suppressing free speech, shutting down the press, and establishing dictatorial military governments in place of the state governments. It was the worst period of repression in American history, and Lincoln’s actions were directed against the freedoms of the North as well as the South.

If Jefferson, who advocated the right of secession, had been alive during the war, he might well have been arrested for treason.

At Gettysburg Lincoln proclaimed “a new birth of freedom.” What he actually brought the country was the death of limited government.

Já Gore Vidal numa entrevista recente, diz:

(Benjamin) Franklin saw danger everywhere. They all did. Not one of them liked the Constitution. James Madison, known as the father of it, was full of complaints about the power of the presidency. But they were in a hurry to get the country going. Hence the great speech, which I quote at length in the book, that Franklin, old and dying, had someone read for him. He said, I am in favor of this Constitution, as flawed as it is, because we need good government and we need it fast. And this, properly enacted, will give us, for a space of years, such government.

But then, Franklin said, it will fail, as all such constitutions have in the past, because of the essential corruption of the people. He pointed his finger at all the American people. And when the people become so corrupt, he said, we will find it is not a republic that they want but rather despotism — the only form of government suitable for such a people.

Re: Assim Falou Aziz, José Manuel Fernandes

Sabiam disto? "British casualties in the war numbered 723,000 – more than twice the number suffered in World War II."

The Pity of War
Niall Ferguson
Basic Books • 1999 • 563 pages

Niall Ferguson is a history professor who taught at Cambridge and is now a tenured Oxford don.

Ferguson asks and answers ten specific questions about the First World War, one of the most important being whether the war, with its total of more than nine million casualties, was worth it.

Not only does he answer in the negative, but concludes that the world war was not necessary or inevitable, but was instead the result of grossly erroneous decisions of British political leaders based on an improper perception of the "threat" to the British Empire posed by Germany. Ferguson regards it as "nothing less than the greatest error in modern history."

He argues that the British had no legal obligation to protect Belgium or France and that the German naval build-up did not really menace the British.(...)He argues further that the Kaiser would have honored his pledge to London, offered on the eve of the war, to guarantee French and Belgian territorial integrity in exchange for Britain’s neutrality.

Ferguson contends that in the absence of British intervention, the most likely result would have been a quick German victory with some territorial concessions in the east, but no Bolshevik Revolution. There would have been no Lenin – and no Hitler either.

"It was ultimately because of the war that both men were able to rise to establish barbaric despotisms which perpetrated still more mass murder."

RE: Re: "Royality" Show

Conservatives: Liberate the masses od the World!

Anti-semitismos

Foxman denounces efforts to target Jewish persons for evangelism, citing Southern Baptists in particular.

Abraham Foxman, Director of the Anti-Defamation League:

"An ongoing theme of particularist theology is the notion that Christians ought to devote their energies to 'saving' the Jews – that is, to converting them into Christians. Although this is supposedly motivated by love for the Jews, this idea is inherently anti-Semitic in that it implicitly denigrates the value of Jewish belief."

ARMISTICE AND REMEMBRANCE

Srdja Trifkovic, www.ChroniclesMagazine.org

...the day when the Great War ended, when the guns fell silent on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

In reality the Great War was the most important event in the past two thousand years and arguably the most tragic event in all of history. It marked the end of an often unjust but on the whole decent world, and opened the floodgates of hell: Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Tito, and countless lesser demons were all its heirs and beneficiaries.
...
as America continues its futile quest for global dominance and its cultural suicide at home, it seems incredible that a mere century ago, the European, Christian world dominated the planet. The suicide of 1914 was a catastrophe rooted in an imperial hubris of neoconservative proportions.
...
President Wilson’s Fourteen Points—the device that was allegedly meant to end the war in early 1918—espoused the principle of self-determination. It threw a revolutionary doctrine at an already exhausted Europe, a doctrine almost on par with Bolshevism in its destabilizing effect. It unleashed competing aspirations among the smaller nations of Central Europe and the Balkans that not only hastened the collapse of transnational empires, but also gave rise to a host of intractable ethnic conflicts and territorial disputes that remain unresolved to this day.
...
Two decades after Wilson, burdened by Clemenceau’s untenable revenge of Versailles, Europe staggered into a belated Round Two of self-destruction. Before 1939 it was badly wounded; after 1945 mortally so. The result is a civilization that is aborting and birth-controlling itself to death, that is morally bankrupt, culturally spent, and spiritually comatose. We are living—if life it is—the consequences of what had ended on that November morning at Compiegne.

Re: "Royality" Show

Sobre os preconceitos do Cataláxia em relação às dinastias, recomendo dois textinhos: David Hume, "That Politics May Be Reduced to a Science"; Edmund Burke, "On the Representation of the Commons in Parliament".

Pena de Morte

Walter Block escreve:

"To whom, then, does the murderer owe his life? Obviously, to the heirs of the victim. If I murder a family man, for example, his widow and children then come to "own" me. They can put me to death, publicly, and charge admission for this event, or they can force me to do hard labor for the rest of my miserable life, the proceeds to go to them. It is a crime and a disgrace that such criminals now enjoy air conditioning, television, exercise rooms, etc. They owe a debt to (the heirs of) their victims, who are now, to add insult to injury, forced to pay again, through taxes, to maintain these miscreants in a relatively luxurious life, compared to what they richly deserve."

Heck, Give Everybody a Gun!, Brad Edmonds

It has been established empirically that we would have less ordinary crime if everybody walked around armed. It has been established empirically that we would have less fear of foreign invasion, and less fear of terrorist attacks, under the same conditions (remember the statement by WWII Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto: "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass."; and see how often Switzerland has been invaded). It was established logically by our government itself in the early days that the government would be better kept at bay with gun ownership. And those towns that have high levels of gun ownership prove what common sense suggests: Widespread gun ownership doesn’t make criminals out of ordinary people – only criminals are made to feel unsafe when everybody’s armed. Indeed, data in the US show that you and I are more trustworthy gun owners than the cops themselves.

Go out and buy yourself some guns today, and give some as gifts. You’ll love yourself for it, and make me feel safer at the same time.

Re: (x4) A crítica a Milton Friedman e à Escola de Chicago

Ok. 1 elogio a Milton Friedman.

"there is no doubt in my mind that Ludwig von Mises has done more to
spread the fundamental ideas of free markets than any other individual."

Noutros campos, defendeu o direito à discriminação (o tal direito à exclusão inerente ao direito à propriedade) criticando a discriminação positiva.

You are all a bunch of socialists".

PS: e em última análise estas tricas e rivalidades alegram a nossa vida :)

A crítica a Milton Friedman e à Escola de Chicago

Num artigo de 1971, na revista de The Individualist e publicado novamente no Journal of Libertarian Studies, Murray N. Rothbard conclui da seguinte forma:

Milton Friedman Unraveled

"It is almost as if any passing joker who mumbles a few words about "freedom" is automatically clasped to our bosom as a member of the one, big, libertarian family. As our movement grows in influence, we can no longer afford the luxury of this intellectual sloth. It is high time to identify Milton Friedman for what he really is. It is high time to call a spade a spade, and a statist a statist."

Os pontos abordados:

1.THE CHICAGO SCHOOL
-The Chicago School on Monopoly and Competition
-Friedman’s Chicagoite Egalitarianism
-Welfare’s "Supply Function"
-Incentives under the Friedman Plan
2.MONEY AND THE BUSINESS CYCLE
-Fisher on Money
-Friedman on Money
-Fisher, Friedman, and the End of the Gold Standard
-A Return to the Gold Standard
3.NEIGHBORHOOD EFFECTS
4.THE IMPACT OF FRIEDMAN

Resumidamente?

For we find Friedman bearing heavy responsibility both for the withholding tax system and for the disastrous guaranteed annual income looming on the horizon. At the same time, we find Friedman calling for absolute control by the State over the supply of money – a crucial part of the market economy. Whenever the government has, fitfully and almost by accident, stopped increasing the money supply (as Nixon did for several months in the latter half of 1969), Milton Friedman has been there to raise the banner of inflation once again. And wherever we turn, we find Milton Friedman, proposing not measures on behalf of liberty, not programs to whittle away the Leviathan State, but measures to make the power of that State more efficient, and hence, at bottom, more terrible.

"All of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the States; the States created the Federal Government."

"We're not fighting for slaves.
Most of us never owned slaves and never expect to,
It takes money to buy a slave and we're most of us poor,
But we won't lie down and let the North walk over us
About slaves or anything else.
"

Ecos da História

1. Hating the Krauts, by Paul Gottfried

The German Resistance, which failed in July 1944, consisted of predominantly conservative, Catholic anti-Nazis who in many cases, e.g., General Ludwig Beck, the diplomat Adam von Trott zu Solz, and former Leipzig mayor Carl-Friedrich Goerdeler, had opposed the Nazis since the 1930s. The first resistance of the old guard had developed in the thirties but failed to obtain the support of the Western Allies, which viewed any collaboration with these German anti-Nazis as a waste of time. By the time the old Widerstaendler, together with anti-Nazi aristocrats such as Klaus von Stauffenberg, Ewald von Kleist, Ulrich von Hassell, and Helmut James von Moltke, attempted to overthrow the Nazis and assassinate Hitler, they knew that they were working alone.

As the German Jewish refugee historian Hans Rothfels shows in his work on the German Resistance, unlike the other anti-Nazi (including und perhaps especially the Communist) undergrounds, his subjects encountered the contempt and suspicion of the Allies. In any case the Western Allies would do nothing that might compromise their alliance with the Soviets, e.g., by making a separate peace with the successful leaders of the Resistance. Thus the conspirators went to work with the sense that they were probably doomed.

2. O mito da democracia imposta ao Japão
Speaking of cultural condescension: Japan had "democracy" long before World War II, with an elected Diet, a figurehead monarch, and a relatively free expression of Western liberal and even radical ideas. The assertion that U.S. troops brought these alien concepts with them for the first time and imposed them by force on reluctant Japanese is laughable.

And the idea that postwar Japanese democracy is an unqualified success is certainly arguable, as Tokyo proves unable to reform its entrenched bureaucracy and put its economic house in order. Even the determined revolutionist Junichiro Koizumi has only just managed to lurch from one crisis to another: the land of the rising sun may yet fall beneath a tsunami of bank debt. So much for the virtues of Japanese democracy: Japan is still a society run by consensus, where Western-style individualism is considered a form of mental illness.

Sim.

Qual a legitima? A que é decidida pelos proprietários. A possível?

Cato Institute sobre Bush Renews Call for Middle East Democracy

"President Bush called Thursday for democratic reforms in the Middle East, saying that 'freedom can be the future of every nation,'" The Associated Press reports.

"Bush said the stakes were particularly high in Iraq, where a U.S.-led coalition toppled Saddam Hussein's rule. 'The failure of Iraqi democracy would embolden terrorists around the world,' the president said."

Patrick Basham, senior fellow in Cato's Center for Representative Government, reacted to Bush's comments today. "Democracy is not a gift that President Bush can bestow on the Middle East," said Basham. "Revealingly, the United States spent hundreds of millions of dollars on democracy programs in the Middle East during the 1990s with no noticeable impact. The reality is that the ingredients for successful democracy are found in domestic political kitchens. Democracy is an opportunity that Iraqis and others must discover, grasp, and craft for themselves."

In "A Democratic Iraq? Don't Hold Your Breath", Basham writes that "the realization of Iraq's democratic potential will depend more on the introduction of a free market economic system and its long-term positive influence on Iraqi political culture than on a United Nations-approved election."

Communist Manifesto

In the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels had shocked the world by calling for the abolition of marriage and family, which they viewed as oppressive institutions. They wrote:

"What is the present family based on? On capitalism, the acquisition of private property. It exists in all of its meaning only for the bourgeoisie… and will vanish when capitalism vanishes. Are you accusing us that we want to end the exploitation by parents of their children? We confess to that crime… The bourgeois sees in his wife nothing but an instrument of production."

Guns and Communism, by Richard Poe

Western Catholic Reporter

Peace is practised, not enforced

Peace and justice cannot be built with the point of a gun. Violence begets violence. Small-scale coercion may be useful in some circumstances, but as the main method for nation building it is futile.

Surely this is one lesson from the war on Iraq. Six months after the war ended, violence is increasing in the country, not abating.
(...)
In short, this was a war that there was no good reason for fighting, but which is having and may well have negative repercussions for years to come. If the coalition was truly interested in rebuilding Iraq, it could have started by dropping the 12-year-old sanctions that left millions of ordinary people either dead or in dire straits, but did little to affect the ruling elite.

But the real dangerous naïvetè comes from those who want to fight their way to peace. Following such a route may please their friends in the arms industry, but it will sow nothing but resentment. And the final fruit of that resentment is likely to be mass destruction on a scale beyond our imagining.
(...)
God gave us free will for a reason. That reason is that we should strive to do good to others and encourage others to walk the paths of peace and righteousness as well. Ultimately, that is the only hope for humanity.

Sem dúvida, um texto no mais puro "state of the art" do "Kill them all!".

Enternecedor como o autor com todo o cuidado avisa: "...do not harm the national parliament building. This must become the seat of the new government, if a democracy is to take root."

E suponho que durante a Guerra Fria estaria a defender o "nuke them before they nuke us", porque no final avisa com pompa: "Will you be there to help clean up the dead when the first terrorist nuclear weapon is detonated in a major American city? Or would you prefer that the will of the terrorists to continue be broken now?"

Não existe absolutamente mais nenhuma alternativa até porque o conflito entre Israelitas e Palestinianos só se prolonga porque: "Israel has been prevented by world opinion and the United States from responding with the level of violence necessary to end terrorism".

Break them now!

(...)

Baghdad has a number of other attractive psychological targets we can exploit:

-Destroy the monument to the Unknown Soldier.
-Convert the military parade ground to a charitable project, or open it to Christian missionaries.
-Destroy the Grand Saddam Mosque, currently under construction. It's probably where the weapons are hidden, anyway.
-Destroy any mosque found to contain even a single weapon. Don't close it, completely level it. Taking up arms against America must exact immediate and severe consequences.

Finally, do not harm the national parliament building. This must become the seat of the new government, if a democracy is to take root.

Some may object to this level of violence. Israel, they will point out, has been responding with violence to Palestinian terrorism for years, and the conflict now is deadlier than ever. But the fact is, Israel has been prevented by world opinion and the United States from responding with the level of violence necessary to end terrorism. Now the world has reaped its reward.

(...)

As I pointed out earlier, Saddam's loyalists can never go free. Tens of thousands of people worked for the regime, and their execution can be timed to demonstrate retribution for the death of each American soldier. A ratio of a hundred Iraqi Stassi executed for each American soldier killed would seem a reasonable starting point.

Is this heartless? Yes. Is it an escalation of the violence? Absolutely. (...)

Will you be there to help clean up the dead when the first terrorist nuclear weapon is detonated in a major American city? Or would you prefer that the will of the terrorists to continue be broken now?

Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, num entrevista:

Holocaust Survivor Denounces Anti-Gun Movement

Q.) Do you think American society has enough stability that Jews and other minorities are safe from severe persecution?

A.) No. I think there is more anti-Semitism in America (some of it caused by leftist Jewish politicians and organizations who promote gun control schemes) than there was in Germany. This may stun some people, but not all Germans hated Jews. My best and devoted friends in Germany were Christians. I perceive America as a very unstable society, due to social tinkering of the Kennedy/Metzenbaum-type politicians. When I first came to this wonderful country after World War II, America was vibrant, dynamic and promising society. There really was an American dream, attainable by those who wanted to work. Now, due to the curse of Liberalism, America is in a period of moral decline. Even worse, corrupt criminals hold high political office, and you have police officials who don't give a damn about the Bill of Rights.

Q.) Why did you join JPFO?

A.) I feel every Jew should be armed to the teeth, as should every American. I joined JPFO because as a group, we can stand up up Liberal Jewish gun haters and also to Gestapo minded anti-gun police who want total control of the people.

Friedrich A. Hayek

Juristas e Liberalismo centralista

"Alexander Hamilton recognized this in The Federalist No. 32 where he wrote that under the Constitution “the State Governments would clearly retain all the rights of sovereignty which they before had and which were not by [the Constitution] exclusively delegated to the United States.”

...the anti-federalists opposed the inclusion of a Bill of Rights for fear that it would somehow imply more powers for the federal government. After all, why provide a limit to a power that did not exist? For example, why provide that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, if no power to regulate speech had been given to Congress in the first place?"

Tirado de um interessante texto para juristas e constitucionalistas: In Defense of Evidence: Against the Exclusionary Rule and Against Libertarian Centralism.

Ora, a razão é a 4ª emenda: “right of the people to be secure … against unreasonable searches and seizures”.

The Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures. It says nothing about the exclusion of evidence that results from such seizures."

E nem sempre tinha sido assim:

"Like so many bad things, the erosion of the traditional common law rule on the admissibility of illegally-obtained evidence began in the twentieth century. The Constitution was ratified in 1789, and the Bill of Rights, including the Fourth Amendment, was added two years later, in 1791. More than one hundred years afterwards, in 1904, the Supreme Court continued to apply the common law rule that evidence is admissible however obtained."

"the exclusionary rule gives rights to the guilty that they do not deserve and does nothing for innocent victims of illegal searches. How can it be mandated by libertarianism?

Another argument is that illegal evidence must be excluded in order to incentivize police not to engage in illegal searches in the first place. But this argument is also flawed. As noted above, there is nothing wrong with “illegal” searches – of guilty people. The problem is unreasonable or warrantless searches of innocent individuals. So we do not want to dissuade illegal searches in general – rather, the goal should be to minimize illegal searches of innocent suspects."

Re: MARIA JOSÉ MORGADO, KELSEN E ROTHBARD

Re: Serviço Público no Picuinhices

As melhores:

Parabéns a Durão Barroso

Aguardemos as reformas concretas.

"Amillennialists think that the millennium is spiritual and allegorical, and it will have no literal political fulfillment in history. This is the view of Dutch Calvinists, Lutherans, and most Roman Catholics. Postmillennialism proclaims a period of peace and justice during which most of the world's population will be Christian."

While there has been much debate as to the timing of the fulfillment of this prophecy, the dominant view in church history has been that this prophecy was fulfilled in 70 A.D., when the Roman army surrounded Jerusalem, crucified thousands of Jews who tried to escape, and took the city. Two Roman soldiers then burned the temple, according to the post-war court historian for the victorious emperor Vespasian, the Jew Josephus."

Quanto aos fundamentalistas dispensionalists:

"The vast majority of dispensationalists are pre-tribulationists. They say that Christians will be pulled into Heaven and out of history immediately before a seven-year period of church-free history. In the second half of this seven-year period, the slaughter of the Jews will begin."
...
Ever since 1991, fundamentalist TV preachers have been frantically seeking a replacement for the future invading nation "from the north" that will surround Jerusalem and kill two-thirds of the Israelis.

"If Jews do not return to the State of Israel, to be concentrated inside its borders, then the prophecy of a final Great Tribulation, where Jerusalem is surrounded by its enemies, cannot be fulfilled. Three and a half years before this Great Tribulation, all Christians get cosmic R&R: their final escape from history and all of its crushing responsibilities, which dispensationalists have prayed for and dreamed about since 1830.

This is why they support the Zionist movement. The Zionists have made the dispensationalists' interpretation of the Great Tribulation prophecy appear tenable. Zionists have created a nation-state for Jews in Palestine."
