O movimento "Libertarian"

* filosófico (ética e moral),
* político (inicio no conservadorismo via "young republicans", a politica do não intervencionismo interno e externo/isolacionismo, tradicionalismo constitucional, fundador nos anos 60 das revistas algo underground "Left&Right", "Libertariam Forum", o Manifesto de 1971 "The Libertarian Manifesto"; o famoso "Cato Institute" e do "Libertarian Party"; o Tratado "The Ethics of Liberty" de 1982, e muito mais, e ainda do informal "paleo-libertarians" como forma de se distinguir dos "left-libertarians") e
* económico (praxeologia, Escola Austriaca),

... como diz o insuspeito George Reisman (pouco conhecido para quase todos, suponho, mas um dos actores vivos da época, amigo de Mises, Rothbard e Ayn Rand) "nasceu no pequeno apartamento de Nova Iorque de Rothbard". Antes que se começe a pôr em causa que assim o seja, é melhor dar uma olhadela à cronologia da sua "produção" e reparar nas datas.

Talvez o que distingue Rothbard (filho de Judeus polacos, tal como Mises diga-se, cuja região -Galicia - era uma partição da Polónia atribuida à Áustria) de todos os outros "autores" é a criação e organização (com a preocupação constante de estudar e referenciar todos os antecedentes,) de um edificio perfeitamente consistente em todos os domínios (Marx e o comunismo, sabemos bem, está cheio de contradições, erros e lacunas), ao mesmo tempo que toma a opção arriscada (e sempre evitada), de se "meter ao barulho" em todos os assuntos da sua época.

Talvez o assunto que faz com que muitos não se lhe queiram associar é a sua consistência na defesa original do ethos americano de politica neutral, mais tarde apelidada de "isolacionismo", mas ao contrário de uma certa direita nacionalista, inserida no "insight" de que o intervencionismo externo torna impossível a manutenção de um Estado limitado "em casa", para além de proporcionar as piores "unintended consequences". Dai, apreciar e contribuir para o revisionismo histórico anti-estatista contra Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson (provocou a queda da "Much more civilized world of pre-WWI", nas suas palavras); Roosevelt, e depois a lógica da guerra fria, acabando os dias (1995) a antever as consequências do pensamento neo-conservador, tornando-se o seu mais critico pensador, expondo o seu militarismo ideológico de raizes trotskistas pela revolução - democrática - global, pouca prudência cultural, preferindo as referências de pensadores conservadores como Robert Nisbet, Russel Kirk, e depois de políticos dos affairs do dia como Pat Buchanan.

Não existe nem de perto nem de longe quem ao mesmo tempo perseguiu uma produção académica criativa (o "antigo" mas também propondo novos enunciados, etc) no meio de tanto activismo político. Como sabemos, é muito dificil encontrar sequer um punhado de artigos ou posições claras, opinativas, frontais, sobre "politicos" concretos, partidos concretos, politicas concretas, assuntos, eventos, em pessoas como Friedman, Hayek, Buchanan, etc. Rothbard conseguiu, sendo coerente com tudo o que tinha escrito teoricamente e politicamente antes e depois, opor-se à guerra do Vietname e às tentações de confronto total com a URSS, ao mesmo tempo que apontava Roosevelt como o grande responsável pela vitória de Estaline na Segunda Guerra. Eu diria que a realidade lhe deu razão.
